Specialized Testing

Blood Volumes

Regional Medical Laboratory no longer performs the assay known as Blood Volume for the evaluation of polycythemia. The test that is currently used to determine polycythemia is the JAK 2 Mutation.  The JAK  2 Mutation, detectable in either peripheral blood or bone marrow has extremely high predictive value for Polycythemia Vera. So much so that requests for blood volume determination for diagnosis of this disorder have fallen to the point where it is no longer feasible to continue to offer it. With regret RML will therefore no longer perform blood volume procedures - JAK 2 mutational analysis is available from the laboratory in situations where polycythemia is being evaluated.

JAK 2 Mutation (V617F) Analysis

Order Name: JAK2 MUTAT
Test Number: 9100185
Test Description

Myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs) are clonal hematopoietic stem cell malignancies characterized by excessive production of blood cells by hematopoietic precursors. In addition to thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications, leukemic transformation can occur. The main members of MPD are Polycythemia Vera (PV), Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) and Idiopathic Myelofibrosis (MF).
