Urine Preservatives pre 12-17-12

Upon request, preservatives can be added to the collection jug by the laboratory before the specimen has been collected. All collection jugs with preservatives must be labeled with the following information:

1) Type and quantity of preservative added.
2) Date preservative was added.
3) Initials of preparer.
4) Complete all patient information on the label containing collection instructions and attach to the container.

NOTE:

Refrigerate during and after collection. After urine collection, add 25 mL of 6N HCL. Stability is enhanced at pH 2-3. A pH lower than 2 may cause assay interference.
OXALATE 24hr URINE OXALATE U Refrigeration - 25mL 6N HCL 10gm BORIC ACID Collect urine with 25 mL of 6N HCl to maintain a pH at 2-3. Refrigerate during and after collection. Urine collected without preservative is acceptable if the jug was kept refrigerated during and after collection, and if the aliquot was sent frozen to the reference lab. Patient should refrain from taking excessive amounts of Ascorbic Acid or Oxalate-rich foods (i.e.,spinach, coffee, tea, chocolate, rhubarb) for at least 48 hours prior to the collection period.

Patient should avoid food high in indoles: avocado, banana, tomato, plum, walnut, pineapple, and eggplant. Patient should also avoid tobacco, tea and coffee three days prior to specimen collection.
